Chanukah
This week we prepared for the very exciting, 8 day holiday, Chanukah! We learned the story through a special puppet show. The Jews lived in Israel and their leader was a ‘Cohen Gadol’ his name was Matisyahu. He worked in the ‘Bet HaMikdash’ the temple and lit the Menorah daily with pure olive oil. Judah the Maccabee taught us the importance of standing up for what we believe in and having faith in Hashem. One of the miracles of Chanukah is that the jug of oil in the temple lasted 8 days. We prepared our Menorahs, in Hebrew they’re called Chanukiyahs. First we sanded down the wood, then we painted and added some decorations, and found our Hebrew letters for our name and lastly took a picture for our Menorah backdrop. We can’t wait to light them!

Honey
This week we learned all about honey. It is made by really hard working bees, called worker bees. They leave their hive and fly out to the flowers to suck out nectar. It’s a special juice found in flowers
they use in order to make honey. When a bee finds nectar it will do a little dance in the air, letting the other bees know that there is nectar. Once they fill up their honey sacs with nectar they come back to their home, their hives. Inside their hives is the queen bee and drones. The queen bee is the mama of all the bees and she is the one in charge. The drones are the dads. Outside the beehive are bees on guard. They watch out to make sure no one will take their honey and if they sense danger, they will use their stinger. Filling the nectar into special honeycombs made of wax and flapping their wings really fast turns the nectar into honey. Using black and yellow colored tape we created bee like patterns on large popsicle sticks. It was fun acting like bees. We looked for flowers around our
class and when we found it we did a little dance to let our friends know where there was nectar. We then brought it back to our hive, filled up our honeycombs and flapped our wings to turn it into honey!

A few Chanukah pointers:
*The first night of Chanukah is Sunday December 6. Each night an additional candle is added increasing in light!
*The Menorah is lit once it's dark outside. For SAFETY reasons the Menorah needs to be watched while it is lit.
