5 Senses

This week we began learning how our bodies explore the world all around us. A special visitor came to teach us all about our 5 senses. His name is Mr. Potato Head. We started with the sense of sight. Hashem gave us two eyes to help use explore the world around us. The white part of our eye is called the sclera, the colored (brown, blue, green) part is called the iris and the pupil is the black circle in the center. The pupil expands when it’s dark and shrinks when it’s light. The friends partnered up and sat knee to knee looking into each other’s pupils. Sure enough, when the light was closed, the pupils expanded! We learned that people who can’t see so well go to an eye doctor who prescribes them glasses, like mini magnifying glasses for their eyes. The second sense we learned about is the sense of hearing. Morah put a song on from the ipod and the singer was giving instructions of what to do. Even though we couldn't see her we were able to follow her instructions by using our sense of hearing. People who are deaf communicate with one another using sign language. We know some A,B,C sign language letters! Next week we will learn about the sense of taste, smell and touch.

O is for Octopus

There are many beautiful species in the ocean. However, there is only one that has 8 tentacles, lots of suction cups, and squirts out black ink when afraid. It is the one and only octopus. An octopus is one of the smartest creatures that live in the sea. Its suction cups not only feel they also taste! Sometimes one of its tentacles can be torn by a fish or rock, and it grows another one just like hair! It has no skeleton and is therefore extremely flexible. It can wedge through rocks or into small caves. A mommy octopus lays her eggs on a string and stays in her cave to protect and watch over them till they hatch. We played a counting game, if an octopus has 6 tentacles how many more will it regrow?
