K and Winter

Winter

Brrr... it’s cold out there!  This week we began to learn all about the season of Winter. In hebrew it's called choref'. First we made a web with the words winter and 'choref' in the center. Each Nursery friend said what came to mind when they think of winter. Ice skating, fireplaces, snowman making, boots and gloves, snow angels, and hot cocoa are a few of the ideas we came up with. We then compared and contrasted the similarities between winter and summer. Glasses, bathing suit, sunscreen and sandals are things we’ll have to hold onto for the summer. For now boots, coats, hats, gloves, and scarves are all going to help us stay warm during the chilly days. There are also many fun activities that we can do during the winter, for example; sledding, ice skating, snowball making, building snowmen and creating snow angels! This week we explored the world of snow and ice. We started by reading the book 'The Snowy Day' by Ezra Keats. We learned how when snow melts it feels wet like water and comes from the clouds just like rain does! Each snowflake is a six sided figure but no two are the same, they're each unique... just like us!

Snowman Names!

Snow art!

After reading the book 'The Snowy Day' we made snowmen making small, medium and large circles with  shaving cream!

We also decorated a six sided snowflake with colorful beads!

Snowman color and size sorting

After cutting out a large, medium and small sized circle we created a 'melting snowman'!

Science Experiment: What makes ice stick together?
How long will it take for the snowman to melt?...
The three different sized balloons, (small, medium, and large), that we froze the day before in our freezer, helped us answer all those questions.
Boy was the ice cold! We had loads of fun.

K is for Kangaroo

This week we had an Australian animal come to the Nursery class. It has two strong hind legs and an even stronger tail. The  baby hides inside its pouch, and that is why it is also known as a marsupial. Its baby’s name is Joey, have you guessed what it is? That is right, it is a KANGAROO! We pretended to get around like kangaroos by jumping from one place to the next. We marked the length of our jump and kept trying to jump further. We enjoyed singing a song that allowed us to act like kangaroos : ‘10 Baby kangaroos standing in a row. When they see their Mama they bow just so. They kick to the left, and they kick to the right, then they close their eyes and sleep all night.’ After learning all about the kangaroo we each made one. Another marsupial that begins with the letter ‘K’ is Koala Bear.

Fun Photos from the week!
